Chapter 08- Delegation and Responsibilities
“Why is delegation necessary? “
you might ask yourself, because there are many situations where you could do a job yourself, maybe even faster, and maybe even better but you do not have the time. Then this chapter is just what you should read.
Delegating work is not only about getting the pile off work of your desk. Delegation involves a lot of trust and responsibility, but try to see delegation as a circle. The time you gain by giving work to others enables you to dedicate more time to more important things. At the same time you can help your team or colleges to grow underneath you. Make sure you delegate entire pieces, not only simple tasks. Expect your staff to succeed and give them slightly more work or responsibility than you think they are able to handle. Remember you wanted to make them grow. Help a person to do better if necessary, never take a delegated project back!
A good idea is to agree on a monitoring procedure, it keeps you informed, as you are still responsible and provides good feedback enabling good communication and ongoing success. Encourage your staff to come up with alternatives in case they ask you for help in the middle of a project, which you then can discus with them, but be careful not to touch on their responsibilities. Remember that a person will feel more motivated about a project when they come up with an idea themselves on how to arrange it instead of their boss telling them the way he/she would do it, only offer advice and share your vision because individuals will feel more motivated to finish their own work, the same way you as a manager feel about doing your own work.
Still having doubts because of the risks? Delegation involves much risk as you are giving another person responsibility and trust, it is only natural to feel a little scared of mistakes but hey mistakes happen. If this happens, you make sure your employee(s) learn from their mistakes, you should motivate them to do it better next time. If you show you are doing a good job as a manager this will be enough to make your team strong enabling good results which will benefit the whole company.
Respect that delegation is not an assignment. It is asking someone to take up more responsibility, just be careful how you do this.
