Whatever style of management your style is motivation is needed for all. If you are a direct manager you may believe that your employees are lazy and the only way to motivate them is to shout at them, their motivator is fear. A discussing manager values opinions of staff and believe that can motivate staff through mutual trust and respect, their motivator is trust and respect. A delegating manager believes strongly in recognising achievement and excellence by rewarding employees, their motivator is rewarding.
As you can see from the different styles of management motivation is carried through by each style even if one may be better than the other, the motivation is still there. Although motivation is truly essential to make a company work, many managers and companies are still not acting upon this important issue. As this is the case with many in many circumstances, here are just a few examples taken from studies examining staff motivation and what employees feel their motivational needs or factors are:
-The working environment - poor or inadequate work facilities
-Working Conditions - too hot, too cold, no breaks, long hours
-Social Interaction - isolation, socialising discouraged
-Job Security - redundancies, feeling not part of company
-Skill or intellectual use -inability or discouragement to use intellectual or skill
-Promotional prospects and job title - lack of promotion
-Responsibility - not allowed to work off own initiative
-Recognition and appreciation - lack of praise or recognition for achievement
-Trust and respect - treated as a machine
-Participation in decision making - not allowed to get involved with company
-Salary – poor pay for job they are doing
-Management issues - conflicts with management
“If you invest in your staff you are investing in your company”
As a manager to avoid this negative feeling in your team you must constantly ask your employees what motivates them, then make changes you feel you can within your limit and finally monitor changes in work levels. You should notice a change in work levels, with happy and motivated staff much more work will get done and it will be more efficient which will benefit you ultimately in terms of profit!!
Many managers still after knowing that motivation is so vital in a company decide to neglect this, some may neglect it totally seeing it as unnecessary, others may not be able to afford changes. Whatever the case be sure to keep a motivated team at all times to unsure a successful business you need a successful team behind no matter how small or large it is!! Next chapter will be on delegation and responsibilities. Enjoy!!
