Chapter 06- Motivation and Inspiration (Part 1)

Successful managers do not require just skills and intelligence. It is motivation which has driven them as far as they are. But where does motivation come from? Parents, money, promised gifts? No… true motivation can only come from inside.

When you think back to being in college, I am sure there were some assignments you were good at without struggling a lot. For some of us it was biology, for others history or physics. Interest is the number one motivator, then comes desire to learn which is number two. If you now combine these two, you already create success. Talking about motivation is easy but doing it is much harder. Of course it is helpful to carry along study skills, intelligence or time management along with you in your backpack. Even the best-equipped motorbike will need a good driver for it to be able to perform at its best.

If you feel there is a lack of motivation, try to evaluate yourself, where the missing motivation is coming from. When doing so, keep different possibilities in mind, for example, in reality you may prefer different subjects in university than those that you are getting taught. Some people start university to get away from home and stay in university just to avoid or just to avoid getting a job. Really ask yourself if the career you are studying at the moment leads you to the profession in which you see yourself.

You can identify yourself with what you can see yourself doing. When talking to kids about school you can tell by their response what motivates them, school and grades themselves or their parents. Later when you are going on to further studies you have to choose what subjects, courses you want for yourself, to help you achieve your dream, do not let parents be your motivator.

For some people it is difficult to distract themselves from other peoples influence. There may be times where study or interest in school is not being considered by cool friends, making you feel nervous to want to learn. Do not let yourself be distracted, make sure you follow your goals; they will bring you the merit you deserve!
Remember the key to effective motivation is the ability of a manager or employee to identify true needs of the employee in the absence of preconceived assumptions, and act upon those needs appropriately to the general satisfaction of the workforce.
