Chapter 2- Management Styles (Part 1)

So you are looking to become a manager well in this chapter we are looking at management in general and discussing the different styles of management.

Business management can be described as the art of making people more effective than they would have been without you. The result is called productivity and we would like to show you five steps that business management include; plan, organize, direct, monitor and evaluate.

Where to start to achieve your goals? Well It all starts with setting a clear goal. Once done so, take your time to brainstorm on the development of your methods to achieve your goal and to define them then.

Let’s pretend your goal is to loose weight. Your next step is to think about methods, also called criteria, to get where you want to go. When doing so, keep in mind to set realistic criteria, for example give priority to fresh food instead of instant food or use every opportunity to exercise, like taking the stairway, not the lift. In a nutshell do not expect to loose 5 kilos in one week; in the same sense, don’t expect to be a successful manager within the first week. Be realistic you need a method which is the first steps to achieve your goal! Use your time to learn more during the planning process and review your initial goals once in a while.

Different styles of management give you an idea about how work can be organised. There are managers that see themselves mainly as employee trainers, whereas others try to delegate as much responsibility as possible to their co-workers and step in only when necessary. There are managers focused on reducing expenses and the simplification of processes, others concentrate more on improving communication and employee relations.

Whatever style you will want to learn or follow or read more about, the essence is to know what impact your management style has on your co-workers. The way a person feels about his or her workplace depends on controllable factors which really reflect your management style!

Now you understand management better and the different approaches to management you are ready to understand the skills you need to become a manager. In the next chapter we are looking at different ‘Management Styles’ and the importance of each. Enjoy!!
