This chapter is the starting point for several management paths. Each path relates to whatever fundamental basic knowledge you have depending on where you are right now in your career and where your interests lie.
When starting out with your career, you are very likely to listen to colleagues, friends and experts, in order to find out the direction and the steps you have to take in your career path. A management career path though is not necessarily as straight forward as that. There can be several detours or curves on the way as it is an individual path and therefore not identical for everyone! However all management career paths do have a beginning or a starting point. Have a look on the five paths explained below.
1) Do you consider management?
You are not quite sure if management is for you or if you can imagine yourself in that position? However, people close to you may have stated that this position is for you or perhaps the idea has crossed your head one day. You may have one day thought in your previous or current job, when looking at your boss “I could do this better” If you find yourself in this stage, read more about management to find out what it is all about and to see if it might be for you.
2) Daring to do it
Once you have decided to go for a management position, your path is to gain all the knowledge needed to get a position for your first management job, even though you have not made experience in management yet. If you get any experience in the field then you are also widening up your skills!
3) Just getting started
The first weeks and months in your first management job are important and challenging. This path will widen your knowledge, problem solving, and understanding of management better.
4) Experience in the real world
After having collected experience in a management job throughout several years, including successes and failures or mistakes on the way, this path leads you to achieve higher goals and a higher position. If you are heading towards a promotion, here you can learn the skills you will need to win it.
5) Consultancy
Learn from former or current managers that are happy to share their experience and professional understanding. This way you benefit from sharing your experience with them, learning means always growing. Now you have seen the career path a manager has to take you may be interested and feel that it is one you wish to take, if it is then you are going to love this course. In the next chapter we will look at the ´Management Styles´. Enjoy!!
