Chapter 05- Marketing and Selling your Business

You are a new company in the marketplace and you want as many people as possible to know about your product. Advertising and marketing is not necessarily expensive as there are so many useful marketing communication tools available, you are sure to find one, which may best suit your industry. Do not be put of by television adverts or expensive forms, as this may not be the best solution for as it is for some. If for instance you are a small company such as a bar you can hand out cheap flyers yourself stating any drink promotions you may have. Other cheap and effective advertising tools include advertising online, create Internet ads, and most importantly focus on word-of-mouth promotion. Creating a ‘buzz’ about your product or service through many people talking about your business is a great way to advertise, even starting off at home through friends and family it is amazing how quick news travels.

Look at the techniques of the competitors in your business area and ask yourself how you can attract their customers. Don’t be afraid to try new techniques. A businessman commented that, his competitor was shy of advertising as there wasn’t much competition around. As soon as this businessman was ready to launch the product he invested in a big advertising campaign and won his rival’s customers.

Sales is a competitive area. You need to convince buyers that your product is better than your competitor and that you are a reliable and trustworthy supplier. As a new business how will you be able to gain the customer’s business?

First of all, you have to show the prospective customer that your product will benefit them. Grab their attention by showing them how much easier and profitable their lives will be with your product or service. If your product is new on the market, persuade the customer that by using it they will have an advantage over competitors, that this innovative new product will ensure even more success to their businesses or lives.

Ask prospective clients what they need and want. When doing initial research does the needs analysis in target enterprises. Find out what they need in a new product. Is there something that is currently not on the market that you can provide? Well, you can create a product or service telling people this is what they need without asking them what they need, you should also decide the price. Just remember that if you market what you are doing correctly, people whether its consumers or businesses will want to do business with you. As long as there is a market ready for your product or service to enter you should always capitalize on this and marketing and the selling of your business is the ultimate way to achieve this!!

Don’t annoy the prospective customer. Remember that the customer will have numerous cold calls from businesses wanting to see their product. Be cheery and pleasant during the sales pitch and accept defeat gracefully. You want the customer to have a positive image of your sales pitch. If you are not too pushy then they are more likely to remember you in the future.

Once you have the sale remember not to get too complacent with the customer. You want to retain this customer’s business. Good sales practice is to maintain contact, follow up the sales with calls to ensure loyalty from the customer. If there is a problem, solve it as quickly as possible. Remember that there is always a competitor for your business.
