Chapter 12- First Review

So you have been working for over a month now and you may be feeling anxious to know how you are getting on. Well your first review will tell you exactly this, however you can use this as a chance for you to discuss any issues you may have with the work and work place.

Assessment
Towards the end of the first month you will get a review of your new performance, which is appropriate and beneficial to your new job. The review helps assess your satisfaction with the direction things are going. A personal assessment can be as simple as asking yourself a few questions. Here are a few which may be on your mind, am I happy? And what makes me feel happy about this job? What don't I like about this job? What can I change? You might also feel you want to develop further, so ask yourself, where can I go from here? And if you would rewrite your resume today, could you update it with improved skills and experience?

Ask your family or friends for feedback as this will also help in the whole process of assessment. People close to you will be able to offer an insight into any change in your behaviour (good or bad) or mental well being (including stress levels) since you started your new job.

Personal assessments are beneficial not only at the end of the first month but throughout the duration of any job. It is the best way to prevent issues from getting out of hand and to stay aware of how you are dealing with them. It is a lot easier to change them before they grow too unmanageable.

Performance Reviews
Many companies arrange performance reviews of employees. A performance review is an evaluation of how well you are doing your job. It will cover likely issues such as a discussion of your strengths and weaknesses, creation of plans to improve on problem areas and setting objectives for the next year.
Usually a review doesn’t occur until the three, or six-month mark, but it is important to prepare for them or at the very least have some idea of what they imply. They could be about specifics such as teamwork and time management as well as your general performance. They may include a discussion of potential for promotion and a discussion on the possibility of a raise.

Very few people look forward to performance reviews but growing means learning about your weaknesses and being able to deal with them. Anticipating an analysis and evaluation of yourself can be nerve wrecking. We all know this. On the one hand accepting criticism is never easy but is essential. The best way to learn and grow is to know your weaknesses so you are able to work on them. So take the criticism as a chance to learn and grow. We can always improve. Accepting this fact graciously and working to strengthen your weaknesses will both demonstrate your professionalism and allow you to move ahead.

Next chapter will discuss the winning spirit and what it takes to reach the goals that you have set for yourself!!!
