Chapter 10- Workplace
When talking about communication keep in mind that another person can not look inside you to see what you are thinking, feeling, and where your values are if you don’t communicate it. Understand that most people in the workplace, including you, have a unique agenda. This isn't necessarily bad, because it helps us achieve and protect ourselves. Just don't assume that someone will know or share your agenda, so talking about what's most important to you and asking what's most important to others, can help build a solid basis for conversation.
An easy step to make communication successful with colleagues is to look for common ground instead of focusing solely on differences. This is a perfect form when you are meeting someone for the first time and the small talk should run smoothly or when selling over the phone. For working in a team or training someone this is essential. What might you both be interested in?
If there is a meeting at work then try and be prepared, ask colleagues on what to expect and take notes, you are part of the team now so you may be asked to contribute, don’t be shy. You must interact use your listening and speaking skills in effect here and if you are not going to have any impact then observe, learn and take notes.
When working in a team you must work together and to be efficient. You will find colleagues at your workplace that you find brilliant and easy working with and you might get angry at others you find are not following up their responsibilities. Instead of managing your colleagues, speak to your manager. Certainly no good manager wants to get involved with personal issues among employees. Instead, approach the matter from a different point of view. Say something like this to your boss:
“It seems to me that for our group to be really effective, we need to make sure that certain things get done and that there isn't any unnecessary overlapping”. “It would really help everyone if you could let us know exactly who is responsible for which task”. “That way we're each accountable, and I think work will go much more smoothly”. “Would you please take this into consideration?”
Be aware that few people are as unpopular as the busy guys who take it upon themselves to order others around. I don't know anybody who responds well to criticism of an accusatory nature, even if it's legitimate. Sometimes it's a good idea to think of the whole team rather than just your place within it. You can use the same approach if it is up to you to sort out the problem.
The secret is to persuade everyone to participate, to take responsibility for certain tasks and that way create a situation where everyone wins. Get your group motivated. Create a positive group feeling among them, so everyone is happy dedicating time and spirit for the group, for progress and success. Keep a sports team in mind. A volley ball game can only be won if all six players cooperate according to the position and tasks their position is requiring!
Now you have the communication skills you need there’s no excuses not to practice them guys…. In the next chapter we will be looking at another important issue which will be your personal development.
