Chapter 7- First Month on the Job

The chapters up until now have been concentrating on how to get a job but now we are going to shift the attention to your first month on the job and what to do once you have started working.

So you are amongst new colleagues who you do not know and you are sitting in front of the computer not knowing where to start well don’t panic. You may feel as though you are not that productive in your first month or that you have not been given much responsibility but this is common as you are still in the learning stages. Just because you may fit the position you are working for it doesn’t mean that you know what to do as soon as you start work. Each company has its own system, way of working and vision of how they want things done, remember the football match example we gave earlier.

In the beginning you may be assigned to tasks which you find menial however you must take all jobs seriously! If your employer can see that you have a professional attitude and respect the fact that all tasks, no matter how small, are important, it won't be long before you find yourself working on a more complex and interesting job. You've probably gone through an induction for new staff and been given a company handbook if there is such a thing. In the meantime you should continue to ask questions, this is your best strategy for further learning.

Once at work do not be afraid to ask questions as finding out as much information as you can is the quickest way you will understand the work ethics within the company. Talk to your work colleagues, make a good impression as you could be seeing them everyday so try and build a relationship with them. Try not to be too relaxed or too tense in your first month as you may be one out of the two. If you are too relaxed your managers may not think you are taking the work seriously causing a bad impression. If you are too tense or nervous in your first month you are just making matters difficult for yourself as you may see work as being a stressful place for you everyday, ultimately you need to see work as a positive thing.

Finding out things for yourself is the best way forward, do not hesitate either and remember everybody in a workplace starts somewhere, they were once as you were. So don’t be afraid to ask how much time they take to chat, have coffee, for lunch,

Have a look around you. What do your co-workers spend time on? Is socializing acceptable? How much time do they take off to chat, drink a coffee, go for lunch? Don't be afraid to ask your colleagues!

It may be that you are doing all this but are still feeling a little bit nervous in your first month, or insecure as to whether everyone will accept you or not well this is normal so do not worry. If you just be yourself and do not put on a character then you will have no problems after the first week you will start finding your bearings and feel a lot more comfortable remember guys it all just psychological…so just concentrate on your performing your task, talk to your co-workers and stop feeling nervous because you will look back at that stage in the future and may feel embarrassed.

Hopefully after these guidelines you’re on your way to becoming a winner in your first month, remember to stay cool and not to panic guys. In the next two lessons we will be discussing communication further, a very important topic. Enjoy!!
