Chapter 5- Job Interview (Pt.2)
In
the last chapter we looked at general guidelines on what to do when going for a
job interview, in this chapter we are going to focus more on techniques which
will help you during the interview.
So
the big day has arrived, here are some easy tips of
what to do and what you should not do. Please arrive at least ten minutes
before your interview time. Smile. Give a firm handshake. Be pleasant to
everyone you encounter. Do not eat or chew gum. Don't accept an offer of food
or beverage, unless it is a meeting over a meal. It is acceptable, however, try
to accept just a glass of water. Say thank you. Use proper grammar. Eighty percent of the
interviewer's impression is visual. Wear clean, pressed professional clothes.
Make sure you are well groomed, and wear little or no cologne. Lean forward
slightly to express your interest. Shoulders back and head up shows confidence.
Avoid fidgeting, as it will make you seen nervous or insecure.
Mirroring-
another trick that
helps you to know how to act. Adjust your speech with the interviewer's speech rapidity and volume.
There is one exception though. Always maintain a positive behaviour and a high
energy level. You may be the interviewer's fourth interview that morning. So, your
positive energy may lift the energy level of the interviewer.
Listening-
active listening
belongs to the key words of interview processing. You
can practice it with your friends or in every day life. Acknowledge with nods
and affirmative comments. Also maintain eye contact. During the interview it is also advisable to take notes selectively. And ask
the smart questions you prepared when appropriate.
The salary question-
prior going to the interview you may
be concerned about the salary. In case you are being
asked, the range you give should be a realistic one. If asked to say what salary you desire,
answer with a question like, "What range do you have in mind?" If the
interviewer persists or requires an answer on the form, give a range. Use a
lifelike range based on the current market. Give a broad range, and make
allowances for variable such as bonuses.
Train your goodbye-
end the interview
with a smile, with firm handshake and your prepared goodbye. Make sure you thank the
interviewer for his, her, their time, and offer any additional information they
may need to make a decision. Now that you are on your
way home from the interview your next step is to word a Thank you letter to the
person that interviewed you.
As mentioned above the next step for you is to prepare a Thank you letter regardless of how the interview went just out of professionalism. Well the next chapter will be based exactly on Thank you letters so enjoy!!
