Chapter 4- Job Interview (Pt.1)
The job interview is a tough stage but one we all need to go through to get
a job. Before going to an interview all of us get a
little bit nervous. The important thing is to be prepared. Let's walk through some simple
steps of the interview process. If you follow them, you'll gain confidence,
poise and why not as well get your target job.
There
are several steps you can do before you are going to your interview. First of
all research your prospective employer. That way you can find out about recent
projects, their partners, their goals. You should know as much as you can about
them before you are going to explain them who you are. Maybe while searching
you can already find some matches between you and the companies’ goals. Your
next step could be to list your accomplishments, skills and experience. It is a
good idea to determine if you are a match for the position. Do your skills and
experience match the requirements and does the company and position fit your
requirements and your goals?
A
good way of finding out for yourself is to list three reasons why you want work
for this employer. Doing this also prepares you to one of the basic common
questions your interviewer might ask you. Focus here on benefits of the
company. After you have done so, prepare some smart questions to ask the
recruiter. This will be easy for you after you have done the research. While
you read about the company I am sure you already came up with many questions.
Now
go ahead and prepare your own answers, be ready to illustrate your past
successes. You might be confronted with questions like: Describe a project
that you managed. Was the project completed on time and on/under budget?
Why/Why not? What would you have done differently? Describe
how you motivate your staff or fellow team members. Painting a
picture with a story helps the interviewer remember you. Like you already did with your
cover letter, to try to stand out of the crowd, you do so again. Remember, you
are not the only candidate the recruiter is seeing that day or that week.
I
am sure you can find a lot of benefits in your curriculum, for example all the
language skills you have. But when telling your
benefits, focus on your benefit to the prospective employer. If your German skills are of great
importance to them, point them out. Remember to be positive and upbeat. It is advisable to
avoid any negative comments about former employers, associates or positions --
even if true. Be honest
about your experience.
Do not claim to speak French when
your level is still very low. As if there is one question from the interviewer
and you are blank it is not going to look good. Be honest, you do not want to
get to the position and find yourself confronted with responsibilities you are
unable to manage. You are supposed to achieve these if you have stated you are
already experienced in it. Be clear and concise and avoid words or industry acronyms not
understood by the general public. Underplay difficulties,
disappointment and challenges. Instead emphasize the experience, lessons and
solutions. Ask smart questions. Avoid patronizing or obvious questions.
In
the next chapter we are going to be looking at more on job interviews focusing
on the common courtesies, appearance and body language.
